Acknowledgement from the album A Love Supreme represents the fully mature sound of John Coltrane. This recording typifies Coltranes attraction for modal jazz. Coltrane loved the freedom of playing above a modal harmonic structure. Notice that the chords in the piano do not have that feeling of progression of tonal music. The chords are all based on the same modal scale and are dissonant enough to allow many soloistic excursions by Coltrane.

Coltrane plays the motive of this selection starting on a number of different notes of the modal scale. He places the motive above the free chordal movement in the piano. The resulting chords are called substitute harmonies; one chord is replaced by another, creating a different but related sound. Such substitute harmonies, including melodic extensions, create sharp dissonances with the fundamental harmony played by the rhythm section.

There is only one brief modal shift in this performance during the vocal statement of the motive. The remainder of the time the original mode is repeated over and over giving this performance a strong sense of stability.
